S.J. MAN ARRESTED ON SEX CHARGES 07-05-10 10:15 a.v.

A San Jose man was arrested from his home last week on sexual abuse charges. 29-year old Efren Becerra was taken into custody after Gilroy officers responded to a report of a possible sexual child abuse Thursday. The 2 juvenile victims and one adult claim they were abused by Becerra. He was booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of multiple counts of sexual abuse of a child.

S.J. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FIRE CONTAINED 07-05-10 10:15 a.v.

A 5-alarm blaze, that destroyed an elementary school in West San Jose early this morning, has been contained. Fire fighters responded to the blaze at 4:15 a.m. to find the majority of Merritt Trace Elementary, located at 651 Dana Avenue, engulfed in flames. The fire, which destroyed the majority of the building that included offices, classrooms, a library, a computer center and a cafeteria, threatened to destroy portable units located about 20-feet from the main building. Fire crews were able to contain the blaze by 7 a.m., the cause remains under investigation, meanwhile, one firefighter suffered non-life threatening injuries and was hospitalized as a safety pre-caution.

4 HOME FIRES IN SO. SALINAS 07-05-10 08:15 a.v.

4 houses caught on fire last night in South Salinas including one that belongs to a member in the Salinas Valley produce industry.   The 1st call occurred just before 7 p.m. when firefighters responded to the 1200 block of San Marcos Drive and found a garage engulfed in flames.  The blaze reportedly spread quickly to the rear of the home, which belongs to George Tanimura, co-chairman of the board at Tanimura and Antle Fresh Foods, Incorporated.  No one was home during the onset of the blaze, fire officials say the home was already on fire, when Tanimura arrived at the scene.   The fast moving blaze then spread to 2 other houses directly behind the one San Marcos Drive.   About 2 blocks away, by 7:45 p.m., the roof of a 4th home located on the 1200 block of LaMirada Drive, also caught on fire.  The use of illegal fireworks is said to be the suspected cause of all 4 fires.

WEST NILE VIRUS SPRAY IN WEST S.J. 07-05-10 07:00 a.v.

Officials in San Jose have scheduled a portion of the city to be sprayed next week for West Nile Virus.  The Santa Clara County Vector Control Districtth.   The area to be ground-fogged is bordered by said that it plans to fog a large area of West San Jose for several hours starting at 11 p.m. on July 13Pruneridge Avenue and Hedding Street on the North, Saratoga Avenue on the West, Interstate 880 on the East, and Payne Avenue on the South.    An open house information meeting will be held Friday July 9th at the Asian Americans for Community Involvement Community Center, Room 210, 2400 Moorpark Avenue from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.    So far, no human cases of the virus have been confirmed this year in Santa Clara County.

WEST S.J. 5-ALARM FIRE 07-05-10 06:00 a.v.

A raging 5-alarm blaze is currently in progress at an elementary school in West San Jose.   Dozens of firefighters are on scene at Merrit Trace Elementary School located on 651 Dana Ave, East of 880.   Firefighters arrived on scene this morning at 4:15 a.m. and found the structure fully engulfed in flames.   Firecrews, who have reason to believe this is a case of arson, report that the main building is 80% destroyed, and are currently working on saving the school’s portable units.   The school, which is known as a k through 5th grade school focusing on drama, art and music, just wrapped up it’s summer school program a few weeks ago, and school officials say a new building will now have to be built prior to school starting up again in August.
