Nobody was seriously injured after a car carrying 5-people went off the road on Saturday. The 4:15 p.m. accident occurred on northbound highway-1, north of Davenport. Authorities believe the driver fell asleep, which caused the car to swerve off the road. It landed in some brush down an embankment. The 4-adults and 1-child in the car were alright. The accident is still under investigation.
The non-profit organization Valley Churches United Missions has launched its annual school-supplies drive, in an effort to ensure all children have the necessary tools to receive a quality educational experience. The organization is looking for shoes, backpacks, pens and pencils, notebooks, highlighters, calculators, and everything else. A 40-dollar donation provides a package of all these items, and several more, to a local student. Donations should be marked with the word “backpacks,” and can be mailed to: V.C.U.M., p.o. box 367, Ben Lomond, California, 95005. Contributions can also be dropped off, at 9400-highway 9, or at Ben Lomond Gas Station, or the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce.
A Monterey Beach, which was closed earlier this week for unsafe bacteria levels, has now been reopened. The closure of Monterey Municipal Beach was lifted earlier today after city officials closed the beach on Wednesday reporting that sewage had spilled into a storm drain system along Pacific Street. Samples taken yesterday showed bacteria levels were safe for recreational contact.
A wanted felon is being sought after crashing his car into a porch during a police pursuit last night in Salinas. 19-year old Andrew Delgadillo Salcido, who is on felony probation, was stopped for a routine traffic stop just before 10 p.m., when he sped off eventually crashing his 1988 Honda Civic into a porch of a residence on the 2-hundred block of Diablo Drive. Deputies say Salcido fled on foot from the scene. Anyone with information, is asked to contact the Salinas Police Department.
A 17-year old boy was arrested this morning in connection with burglarizing a King City shoe store. Officers, who responded to an alarm activated at the Payless Shoe store on Canal Street, found the window of the store had been broken along with $2,000 missing from the cash register. The teen was found running behind the business, where he was booked into Monterey County Juvenile Hall on several charges including suspicion of burglary, possession of burglary tools, and violation of juvenile probation.
