JURY SELECTION BEGINS FOR EX-PRISON GUARD 07-12-10 07:30 a.v

Jury selection is slated to begin today in the case of a 39-year old ex-prison guard who hired a hitman to kill a woman he once dated. The former Salinas Valley Prison guard, Timothy Rodriguez pleaded not guilty to charges of pre-meditated murder after he allegedly tried to hire a hit man who was actually an undercover officer. Rodriguez faces a potential life sentence if convicted of attempted pre-meditated murder, solicitation for murder and possession of a silencer. The trial, which is expected to last 2 weeks, will be the 1st public airing of evidence against him.

SALINAS SHOOTING 07-12-10 06:30 a.v.

A 17-year old was hospitalized in Salinas last night after suffering multiple gunshot wounds during a gang-related incident.   The victim was with several  other teens when they were approached by 2 male suspects shortly before 8 p.m. on the 2100 block of North Main Street in front of the Northridge Manor Apartment Complex, when several shots were fired after a brief verbal altercation occurred.   The boy is reportedly in serious but stable condition, meanwhile, the 2 suspects fled on foot on North Main Street.   Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the crime tip line at 1-800-78-crime.

MONTEREY SOLDIER KILLED 07-12-10 05:50 a.v.

A Monterey resident is 1 of 3 soldiers who died in Afghanistan earlier last week. Specialist, 26-year old Roger Lee was part of “Operation Enduring Freedom” when he, along with 2 others, were attacked and killed by insurgents on July 6th in Qalat Afghanistan. The men were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment in Germany. Flags were flown at half-mast at the capital honoring the 3 men.

Monterey Shots fired 7/11/10 TDH

Nobody was injured after gunshots were fired in Monterey County over the weekend.   At 11:36 Saturday night, several, 45-caliber handgun shots were fired into a vehicle and into a home, on the 67-thousand block of Jolon Road (in Lockwood).  Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, however they were unable to locate any suspects.  Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to contact the Monterey County Sheriff’s department.

Fire contained, S. MCO 7/11/10 TDH

A brush fire broke out in south Monterey County on Saturday afternoon, and was contained in a few hours.   The blaze began around 1 p.m., in a grassy area near Copperhead Road, near the community of Bryson-Hesperia.    About 60-firefighters from Cal-Fire, South Monterey County Fire Protection District, and Hunter Liggett Fire Department were able to contain the flames to 4-acres, by 4 p.m.   No injuries were reported in connection with the fire.
