Greenfield arrest 7/18/10 TDH

A 21-year-old man was arrested in Greenfield on Saturday, who authorities say is a known gang member.   Derick Martin Barajas was taken into custody at 11:30 p.m., after leading Monterey County Sheriff's Deputies on a foot chase.   Deputies say Barajas threw away a loaded handgun during the pursuit, and that when they caught him, they found methamphetamine packaged for sale.   He was booked into Monterey County Jail on several charges.

Career-transition website 7/18/10 TDH

If you're looking for a job, or looking to change your career, make sure you have a Santa Cruz library card.   Librarians are set to hold a workshop Tuesday morning, to demonstrate the new career-transitions database, which is available to all library card holders.   The workshop is from 9 to 11 a.m., at the Central Library located at 224 Church Street, in Santa Cruz.  The career-transition database is accessible from the "'Internet Resources' section" of the library's website, at w w w dot santa cruz p L dot org.   (www.santacruzpl.org) Another workshop is scheduled for the same time on July 27th.

Salinas pursuit, arrest 7/18/10 TDH

A 27-year-old gang member was was arrested outside Watsonville today(Sun), after leading authorities on a car chase.  At 5:21 p.m., Members of the Salinas Police Department's Violence Suppression Unit recognized Bicente Carasco sitting in car in the Lamplighter Trailer Park.  Carasco was on parole, and officers attempted to conduct a parole search of his vehicle.   However, Carasco fled, and led officers on a pursuit on Highway-101.   The chase ended on San Juan Road at Allison Road, and Carasco was booked into Monterey County Jail for an outstanding warrant, and for felony evading arrest.

2 Shot in Salinas 7/18/10 TDH

Two men were shot in Salinas early this(sun) morning. At 2:36 a.m., police responded to the 18-hundred block of Lohman Street, and found a 23-year-old victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.   A 28-year-old man was also found in an adjacent garage, who had been shot in the leg.   He was treated locally, while the 23-year-old was air-lifted to a Bay area hospital for medical attention.   Police say witnesses told them that there were 2-shooters, however neither have been located, and no arrests have been made.

House Fire (Carmel Valley) 7/18/10 TDH

A fire broke out at a Carmel Valley house on Saturday, causing the death of a family dog.   Nobody was home when the 2:45 p.m. fire ignited, in the kitchen of a house at 37 Poppy Road.   Firefighters contained the flames to the kitchen, in about 15 minutes, however the dog was found dead of smoke inhalation.   No other injuries were reported, and its estimated the blaze caused about 150-thousand dollars' worth of damage.
