S.C. BOARDWALK VANDALISM 07-22-10 19:25 a.v.

A Stockton teenager was arrested after vandalizing a ride that made it’s debut at the Santa Cruz BeachBoardwalk a month ago. Police say the 16-year old boy was on the Haunted Castle ride Saturday night when he allegedly tugged on a prop, then dragged it onto the ride’s tracks. The teen was  arrested and booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of vandalism causing over $5,000 worth of damage. The ride, which has been closed since last fall for a 9-million dollar revamp, reopened on Sunday.

FREEDOM BLVD CHAIN REACTION CRASH 07-22-10 19:05 a.v.

4 people suffered injuries during a chain reaction crash in Santa Cruz today. The 12:40 p.m. incident occurred on Freedom Boulevard near McDonald Road when a Boulder Creek woman, driving a Mazda 3, was making a left-hand turn on Parkhurst Circle when a Watsonville woman did not see the stopped car and crashed her Ford Mustang into the woman causing her Mazda to be pushed into oncoming traffic, which then caused a head-on collision with a Toyota van, who then collided into a nearby embankment. The driver of the van was hospitalized with minor injuries, while the others were treated at the scene.

OLD STAGE ROAD FIRE 07-22-10 18:30 a.v.

Monterey County fire crews responded to a report of a grass fire in Salinas this afternoon. The blaze, which was reported just after 3 p.m., burned an open field on the east side of Old Stage Road across from Spence Road. Fire officials say the fire was quickly contained due lots of open land around the flames. The cause of the fire awaited confirmation from PG&E officials, who were on scene examining a power pole at the edge of where the fire began. No structures were damaged or threatened, and no injureis were reported.

SALINAS PRIEST’S HEARING – UPDATED 07-22-10 18:00 a.v.

A Salinas priest, who’s been accused of sexually assaulting a teenager, appeared in court this afternoon (thurs). 42-year old Antonio Cortes (of Saint Mary of the Nativity Church in Salinas) faces felony charges of sodomy with a minor, and misdemeanor counts of possession of child pornography. The hearing was held to select which evidence will or will not be excluded from the case. Arguments are slated for September 16th followed by a reported ruling. Cortes was placed on administrative leave after his arrest, which came 2 days after the molestation claims were made.

MONTEREY MEDICAL POT CLINICS 07-22-10 17:40 a.v.

A Medical Marijuana Dispensary that opened in downtown Monterey is no longer in business, and another separate clinic also faces possible closure. Police say, the business that operated under the name of Green Shores Patient Center opened in the 100 block of West Franklin Street earlier this year and has recently stopped operating out of the building. A representative for the Monterey Police Department also says that the city is expected to take legal action on a separate clinic. Court papers are currently being prepared to close down My Caregiver Co-op, a medical marijuana clinic on Lighthouse Avenue that opened last year.
