The State Coastal Commission announced yesterday that they’ve set a date to rehear the city of Santa Cruz’s Arana Gulch case. The plan is scheduled to be heard toward the end of the commission’s 1st day of hearings which begin at 9 a.m. on August 11th at the San Luis Obispo Government Center. The city was asked to provide more information to the commission about possible alternatives to the plan for paving twin bicycle and pedestrian paths through the 68-acre greenbelt.

Fire crews in Soledad this morning responded to an early morning structure fire at the 98 Cent Store located in a strip mall on the 500 block of Front Street. The fire appears to be out now. However, fire officials from Soledad, King City and Gonzalez are still on scene. No injuries have been reported.

Beginning today, Santa Cruz County offices will be closed as part of a cost saving measure. County leaders announced this week that furloughs will occur one Friday a month for the next year, and for a week at the end of December. All County parks, courts, state legislative offices and child support services will be open. However, some Santa Cruz County Superior Court offices and services will be closed during the county furlough days, such as the Watsonville courthouse. The clerks offices at the Santa Cruz courthouse on Ocean Street will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. today with a drop box available until 5 p.m.

A Watsonville man pleaded guilty wednesday to charges of sexual battery and rape when he attacked a woman last Fall on the Pajaro River levee. 25-year old Mauricio Lopez attacked the 19-year old jogger on October 21st while she ran near Lakeview Road between College Road and Riverside Drive. Lopez, reportedly assaulted the woman, then dragged her into an embankment before she was able to fight him off and escape. Lopez, who was identified a month later after a warrant for his arrest was issued, will spend 6 years in state prison. He faces sentencing on September 14th.
