RISPIN MANSION DEMOLITION PROCESS 07-23-10 12:00 a.v.

A decision was made yesterday to begin the environmental review process needed to demolish Capitola’s historic Rispin Mansion. The mansion, which was built in 1922 and has been vacant since 1959, was gutted by fire in May 2009. Capitola council members voted to begin the demolition process, which could begin as early as December.

Mo.Co. Whooping Cough 07/23/10 E.A.

Only one case of Whooping Cough was reported in Monterey County last week, down from 6 reported cases the previous week. State health officials are urging residents to get booster shots to protect themselves from the contagious disease. Monterey County has had 33 reported cases of Whooping Cough this year.

P.G. Pensions 07/23/10 E.A.

The Pacific Grove City Council voted to enact an initiative that would cap city contributions to employee pension benefits at 10 percent of the workers salaries. Union and state Public Employee Retirement System officials warned the city that it could face lawsuits if the required contributions are not made. Under the new initiative, employees can pay additional amounts toward their retirement out of their own pockets.

Toxic Algae Blooms 07/23/10 E.A.

A team comprised of scientists from a variety of local institutions will conduct a study to predict when and where toxic algae blooms are likely to occur along the California Coast. The team received a a nearly 8-hundred-thousand dollar grant from the Ocean Protection Council and California Sea Grant to help fund the project. The algae blooms, known as “red tide”, is believed to have sickened or killed hundreds of seabirds in the central coast. The research team hopes to develop a model to determine when the toxic blooms would occur in the Monterey Bay.

Hollister Shooting 07/23/10 E.A.

 

Hollister police are searching for two suspects involved in a shooting yesterday. Around 4:30 P.M, two men were sitting in a car in front of a Hollister grocery store off San Juan Road, when the suspects approached the vehicle and shot multiple times. The shooting is believed to be gang related. Anyone with any information on this incident is asked to contact the Hollister Police Department.
