APTOS VILLAGE PROJECT DESIGN PLANS 07-27-10 19:40 a.v.

Design plans for a new Aptos Village project were released today to the public. The Development plans for the 6-acre remodel include covered walkways, porches and a grassy town commons with new trees, picnic tables, and raised planters and benches that is expected to hold 1,000 people. Some 2-and 3-story buildings are expected to include 1st floor storefronts and upper-floor balconies and residential apartments. The development plan is slated to go before the Santa Cruz County’s Historical Commission this fall, the Planning Commission by the end of the year, and Board of Supervisors early next year. Construction is expected to break ground late summer or early fall of next year, if plans are approved.

EIR APPROVED FOR NEW POGONIP TRAIL 07-27-10 19:30 a.v.

A unanimous vote, approved this week by Santa Cruz City Council members, is expected to start the environmental review process for a new Pogonip trail. Council members plan to review a design plan and E-I-R by November 15th. The new plan would look into adding a 2nd multi-use trail, to the 640 acre site, as a way to address a public safety concern about heroin camps in the park. The state-required study is expected to cost the city $25,000.

WATSONVILLE FATHER AND SON ARRESTED 07-27-10 19:10 a.v.

A Watsonville father and son were arrested this week on charges of sexually abusing the same girl. 46-year old John Charlie Deanda and 23-year old John Nicholas Deanda are suspected of abusing the girl, who was 7 years of age during the time the alleged molestation began, for about 5 years on different occasions. Both father and son were taken into custody Monday morning from their Gilchrist Lane home. As of this afternoon, each man’s bail was set at 50-thousand dollars.

S.C. UTILITY TAX INCREASE 07-27-10 19:00 a.v.

A measure being considered for the November ballot in Santa Cruz is expected raise the city’s utility tax. The tax, which would be raised between 1 and 2-percent, is expected to provide more funding for police, fire and other public services. City leaders are considering a financial plan to address budget and service level challenges that would cut costs by recruiting more businesses to Santa Cruz, which leaders say, would also raise sales tax revenue. The plan also includes support for proposition 22, and a utility-tax measure to fund general city services.

SALINAS MON. NIGHT FATAL CRASH 07-27-10 18:30 a.v.

Salinas police are investigating a Monday night crash that left one man dead and one woman injured. The 27-year old driver and his 26-year old passenger were traveling southbound on Highway 101, when the man’s vehicle veered off the road, collided into a metal guardrail, and then crashed into a concrete pillar. The driver suffered severe trauma to his chest and died at the scene, while the passenger suffered multiple injuries and was taken to San Jose Regional Medical Center for treatment. The cause of the 11:30 p.m. incident is still being investigated.
