S.C. PARKS SMOKING BAN LIFTED FOR WAMMFEST 07-28-10 07:00 a.v.

Santa Cruz City Council members have agreed to lift a smoking ban in parks, for an upcoming event slated for September. The council approved the measure requested by the group Wo/men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana to allow Medical Marijuana users to participate during the annual WAMM Fest which is set to be held in San Lorenzo Park. The event is designed to bring awareness to the usefulness of medical marijuana, and will allow those with valid medical marijuana cards to smoke in the park without being prosecuted. The smoking ban will be lifted for 5 hours on September 25th. For more information, visit their website at www.wammfest.org.

MANSLAUGHTER/DUI CHARGES, MARINA FATHER 07-28-10 06:30 a.v.

A Marina man is expected to face vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence charges following a high-speed crash that killed his 8-year old son yesterday morning.  32-year old Zabdiel Solis Arciga was booked into Monterey County jail after he crashed a vehicle into a metal guardrail at the Fremont/Del Monte off ramp on southbound Highway-1 near Seaside shortly before 1 a.m.    Authorities say Arciga was traveling over 120 miles-per-hour with his son in the car, while trying to evade officers.   Arciga was hospitalized with minor injuries while the boy, Isaiah Solis Becker was airlifted to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.  Arciga is slated to be arraigned today.

S.C. ROCK THROWING INCIDENT 07-28-10 05:50 a.v.

No arrests were made after a rock was thrown from a passing vehicle striking a man waiting for a bus in front of Dominican Hospital Monday night. Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Deputies say the rock was thrown from a newer model green Jeep Cherokee around 8:45 p.m. on Soquel Drive near Paul Sweet Road, the same location, where Deputies say, prior incidents of motorists throwing rocks at pedestrians and cyclists have taken place.

AROMAS GAS STATION ROBBERY….AGAIN 07-28-10 05:30 a.v.

For the 3rd time this month, an Aromas gas station was robbed at gunpoint Monday night. According to Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies, the San Juan Road convenience store, which was robbed on July 8th and 18th, was robbed again just before 11 p.m. when a latino man in his early to mid 20’s brandished a handgun and demanded money from the clerk. The man fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, anyone with information is asked to contact the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department.

NOT GUILTY PLEA, SHOPPERS CORNER ROBBERY 07-28-10 05:00 a.v.

A Santa Cruz man pleaded not guilty yesterday to burglary and other charges after being accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of frozen food from a Soquel Avenue grocery store this summer. 31-year old Seth Justin Fusari, who was linked to at least 9 break-ins at Shoppers Corner, is slated to return for a preliminary hearing on August 9th, he faces time in state prison if convicted.
