ARANA GULCH PLAN POSTPONED 07-29-10 20:20 a.v.

Officials with the Coastal Commission announced today that they will delay hearing the city’s revised proposal for the Arana Gulch plan for several months. A coastal planner says the panel’s staff needs more time to study the new changes, submitted by the city in recent weeks, and to evaluate potential impacts of the proposal, which outlines an altered multi-use trail system for the 68-acre greenbelt. Commissioners were slated to rehear the city’s application for a coastal permit next month on August 11th.

S.C MURDER CASE DATE SET 07-29-10 19:55 a.v.

A preliminary hearing date has been set for 3 alleged gang members accused of killing a Santa Cruz High School student last fall. A ruling today  announced that Daniel Onesto, Pasqual Reyes, and Walter Escalante will appear on November 15th for their alleged roles in the October 16th fatal stabbing of 16-year old Tyler Tenorio. All 3 have pleaded not guilty to murder and gang charges. A 4th man connected with the murder case, Paulo Luna, is still being sought.

SALINAS PACKING CO. LAWSUIT SETTLED 07-29-10 19:45 a.v.

A former employee with a Salinas-based broccoli packer will receive nearly 50-thousand dollars in damages to settle a sexual harassment and retaliation lawsuit. The suit claims that the victim, who packed broccoli for the Hilltown Packing between 1999 and 2005, faced sexual comments, propositions and touching from her supervisor. The suit also says that the employee was not called back to return the following season after reporting the behavior to management.

MARINA MAN CHARGED 07-29-10 19:25 a.v.

A Marina man pleaded not guilty to all charges today, after his 8-year old son died in a fatal d-u-i crash in Seaside Tuesday morning. 32-year old Zabdiel Solis Arciga was arraigned and charged with 2nd degree vehicular manslaughter, felony child endangerment, 2 counts of felony driving under the influence, and evading police. Arciga was driving over 120 miles-per-hour on Highway-1 before crashing into a guardrail while exiting off the Fremont/Del Monte off-ramp before 1 a.m., when his son, Isaiah Solis Becker, was killed in the crash. Arciga is slated to appear in court august 4th, he faces a possible life sentence if convicted of the 2nd degree murder charge.

3 SEPARATE SALINAS SHOOTINGS 07-29-10 18:15 a.v.

In Salinas, 3 separate shootings in less than 24 hours have left 2 teens dead and 2 in critical condition. 16-year old Frank Sanchez died yesterday when he was shot in the head at 8:29 p.m. while sitting in a car at West Market and Capital Streets. 14-year old Kristian Zamudio also died yesterday when he and another victim, a 14-year old boy, who remains in critical condition, was shot at around 8:36 p.m. at Perez and Prado streets. Meanwhile, this morning a 15-year old standing outside of a home on the 1,000 block of Del Monte Avenue, just south of North Sanborn Road, was shot in the torso around 9:15 a.m. The teen was flown to an area hospital where he remains in serious condition. Police are investigating this latest shooting as gang-related.
