2-1-1 Hotline Launched 8/1/10 11:25 p.m. TDH

A hotline to help those in distress has been launched in Santa Cruz County.   After more than a year of planning, the 2-1-1 hotline launched on Friday, and is designed to put people in contact with social services that can help them.   The hotline is expected to take some pressure off of 9-1-1 dispatchers.   You can also call 2-1-1 during a disaster, to find out more information about emergency procedures.   The 2-1-1 hotline is being funded by the United Way of Santa Cruz County.

Poaching, MCO 8/1/10 11:20 p.m. TDH

2-Coalinga men were stopped by authorities in South Monterey County on Friday, after they were allegedly poaching.  The 2-men were seen in a car on the side of Highway-25, about 2-miles south of Lewis Creek.   Monterey County Sheriff's Deputies say the 2-men were in possession of multiple firearms, hunting knives, field-dressing kits, and other items consistent with poaching.   The 2-maintain they were scouting the area for when deer season legally opens.  The case has been forwarded to the Monterey County District Attorney's office. The citation comes in an area of Highway-25 that has seen increased poaching of deer.

C-H-P enforcement, HWY-129 8/1/10 11:20 p.m. TDH

The California Highway Patrol has begun a year-long campaign of increased enforcement on Highway-129, near Watsonville.   A 220-thousand dollar grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety is funding the enforcement effort, which will increase scrutiny on speeders in the area, from now through July 31st, 2011.   The area targeted will be Highway-129 between Blackburn Street and Old Chittenden Road.   The goal of the campaign is to reduce traffic accidents in the area.

Marina Airport Grant 8/1/10 11:20 p.m. TDH

The Marina Municipal Airport is set to undergo runway repairs, after receiving a grant from the Federal Government.   A 1.5-million dollar grant was announced last week, by the Federal Aviation Administration.   The money is expected to be used to rehabilitate the runway and lighting at Marina Municipal Airport.

Marina Structure Fire 8/1/10 11:20 p.m.TDH

Nobody was injured after a fire ignited at a vacant apartment in Marina on Saturday.   Investigators believe the around-8:30 p.m. fire may be a case of arson.   Fire crews had the flames under control in about 10 minutes.  The 8-unit apartment building located on Lexington Court was vacant, and set to undergo renovations.
