CARMEL APPROVES FIRE DISTRICT MERGER 08-27-10 10:30 a.v.

In an effort to help cut administrative costs, plans were approved yesterday to consolidate Carmel Valley and Monterey County Regional fire departments. The Carmel Valley Fire board voted 5-to-0 to merge with Monterey County Regional Fire, who approved the merger last month. A hearing to finalize the consolidation plan is expected to be held before the Local Agencies formation Commission sometime in October.

MCO. SUICIDE ATTEMPT RESCUE 08-27-10 10:15 a.v.

A man was rescued this week in Monterey County after driving off a cliff in a suicide attempt. A search and rescue unit responded Tuesday at around 12:30 p.m. to a report that a motorist had driven off Laureles Grade near Carmel Valley. The man, who received minor cuts and bruises, was pulled from the vehicle, which ended up in thick brush about 500 feet below. He was taken to the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula for a 72-hour mental health observation hold.

SEA BASS OVER ABUNDANCE 08-27-10 09:45 a.v.

A large number of white seabass have been seen around the Monterey Bay for several weeks now. Some fishermen, who believe their numbers have been in decline for several years, say their appearance here could indicate the health of the water and ecosystem around the bay. It’s not certain, at this point, how long the overabundance of white Seabass will last, however The City of Monterey Harbormaster believes the fish are likely to leave once temperatures outside and water temperatures fall.

SO. MCO DUI CHECKPOINT 08-27-10 09:25 a.v.

A Dui/Sobriety/Driver License checkpoint will be conducted in South Monterey County today. The checkpoint will be conducted from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Jolon Road. All vehicles will be checked, and drivers who are impaired due to alcohol and/or drugs, will be arrested.
