S.C. TO BROADCAST LIVE OPERA 09-02-10 18:30 a.v.

Beginning this fall, a Santa Cruz Cinema will start offering a weekly live broadcast of the opera.   Santa Cruz Cinema 9 will begin it’s first live broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera from New York on October 9th, and is expected to feature Richard Wagner’sDas Rheingold”.  The broadcast will be aired live each Saturday morning at 10 a.m., and an encore repeat performance Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. for 12 weeks through May 2011.  For more information, visit, wwwmetoperafamily.org.

CITY OF WATSONVILLE CITED 09-02-10 17:30 a.v.

The City of Watsonville has been cited for not complying with a state fluoridation deadline. The $200 fine, which has been suspended until the end of this month, was included in the citation issued by the State Department of Public Health on Wednesday for failing to meet a deadline to commit to fluoridating the public water supply by this Sunday. The deadline was set in a citation issued by state public health officials on August 19th. A written commitment to fluoridate is being required by state officials by September 29th.

S.F. BAY PLANE CRASH/1 KILLED 09-02-10 17:00 a.v.

1 person was found dead and 2 others are still being sought after a plane crashed in a lagoon off the San Francisco Bay this morning. The twin-engine Beechcraft plane crashed into the Oracle Lagoon in the Redwood Shores neighborhood at 11:53 a.m.. The body of a 40-year old woman has been recovered, divers, however, are still searching for the bodies of 2 men, who were believed to be inside the plane during the time of the crash. Officials say the plane, which went down after taking off from the San Carlos Airport, was owned by 92-year old Robert Borrmann, the founder of a local steel company. The plane was headed south for San Martin, just north of Gilroy, when it crashed for mechanical reasons.

PLASTIC BAG BAN GETS LOCALIZED - 09/02/10 11:42 S.S.

With  the  statewide  ban  rejected  by  legislators,  a  number  of  county  supervisors  around  the  state,  including  Santa  Cruz  county,   plan  to  create  their  own  rules  about  plastic  bags.       Local  leaders  say  they’ll  work  on  prohibitions  on  plastic  carry-out  bags.       They   further  said  that  the  plastic  bags  are  not  only  an  environmental  hazard,  they  also  cost  a  lot  of  money  to  collect,  and they  take  up  a  lot  of  space  in  landfills.

SB 17 NOW OPEN - 10:33 update - 09/02/10 10:30 S.S.

No  one  was  injured  when  a  big-rig  overturned  on  southbound  Highway  17 this  morning.      The  trailer  was  carrying  a  load  of  beer.      Southbound  traffic  was  diverted  onto  Summit  Road from  around  6:30  until  10:23  this  morning.   The  northbound  lanes  of  traffic  (of  Highway  17)  also  moved  very  slowly  for  much  of  that  time.
