A 46 year-old watsonville man was arrested yesterday, after he stole a woman’s car and nearly ran her over with it. Mark Anderson faces possible charges of carjacking, assault, robbery, and hit-and-run. The incident occurred around 3 p.m., when the 40 year-old victim left her keys in the car as she was dropping her children off at the freedom branch of the Watsonville library.

Construction work has begun on a new Marshalls store slated to open this upcoming winter in Santa Cruz. The 28,000 empty square foot space on Commercial Way, was formerly occupied by a Circuit City store, next door to the Toys-R-Us retailer. Construction for the discount store is expected to cost around $926,000. A grand opening is scheduled for November 6th.

Santa Cruz City Leaders approved an ordinance last night that would allow thousands of rental units around town to be monitored. The ordinance, which requires owners of rental properties to register their units and submit to an inspection, if called to do so, was passed by City Council members in a 5-to-1 vote. Council members say the measure, which will be overseen by the Planning Department, is necessary to target suspected illegal units and negligent landlords.

Investigations continue into a fatal big rig crash that occurred on Highway 56 yesterday that shut the road down for nearly 4 hours. The accident took place at 2:32 p.m. between San Juan Bautista and Hollister near Bixby Road, when a Toyota pick-up truck drifted over to the other lane and collided into a big rig killing the driver of the Toyota, a 56-year old Atascadero man. The man was pronounced dead at the scene; meanwhile a 2nd person was airlifted to an area hospital. The crash caused roughly 150 gallons of diesel fuel to be spilled on the road. The highway reopened as of 6 p.m.
