SV Movie Theater Expansion 09/17/10 0800 E.A.

The owners of a Scotts Valley shopping center are looking to expand the movie theater there, which would make it the largest movie complex in the county. The expansion would increase Cinelux Scotts Valley Cinema from 6 screens to 10, offer stadium seating and would add a wine bar to the concession area. The construction is expected to cost over 1 million dollars and take 4 to 6 months.

Otters with Shark Bites 09/17/10 0800 E.A.

A record number of shark attacks on sea otters has been reported on the California coast. The California Department of Fish and Game reports 26 attacks on sea otters by Great White sharks since August. 3 attacks were reported in the Monterey Bay area. Scientists believe the increase in attacks is a result of cooler than average ocean water temperature.

MORGAN HILL FATAL ACCIDENT 09-17-10 08:30 a.v.

A Morgan Hill man died in a car crash early this morning. The just before 1:30 a.m. accident occurred on Little Uvas Road near Morgan Hill when the man crashed into a tree. Officers say the man was discovered slumped in his car about 100-feet off the roadway when he was pronounced dead at the scene. C-H-P is investigating if the weather or speed played a role in this fatal single vehicle crash.

UTILITY TAX WAIVED FOR S.C. SENIORS 09-17-10 08:00 a.v.

A first time waiver for senior citizens was created this week by the Santa Cruz city council to help increase the exemption for low-income residents from the utility users tax. The council approved exempting the first $100 in monthly gas and electric bills for participants in P-G-and-E’s low-income program, as well as residents who are 65 years of age or older. The current rules have no senior waiver, but do exempt low-income users for the first $34 of combined gas and power bills.

WVILLE CITY PLAZA NAME CHANGE 09-17-10 07:30 a.v.

The Board of Directors with the Pajaro Valley Historical Association voted Yesterday to keep the traditional name for the main downtown park, the Watsonville City Plaza.   The City Parks and Recreation Commission will consider a request Monday from Watsonville Mayor Luis Alejo to change the name to the “Watsonville Dolores Huerta City Plaza” in honor of the co-founder of the United Farm Workers.   The commission is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. to Monday September 20th at City Hall at 250 Main Street.
