A team of consultants has been hired to improve academic achievement at Alisal Union School District. 2-hundred-thousand dollars of state money has been allocated to hired a District Assistance Intervention Team, which will evaluate teachers and give instruction on how to improve. Hiring the consultants is part of a plan to improve test scores at low-performing schools across the state.
A ceremony to honor the Salinas Valley Ag Leader of the Year will take place tomorrow. Laura Giudici Mills is the 4th generation of a farming family. She will be recognized by the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce for showing commitment to the betterment of the Agricultural industry, leadership, ethics and integrity. Mills, who has been the director of food and workplace safety for the past 3 years at the King City spinach company, Metz Fresh, attributes her parents as her role models, along with her career in agriculture.
New data shows 203 illegal immigrants have been deported from Monterey County since a new program went into effect 5 months ago. The large number of deportations is a result of the Secure Communities Program, which requires offenders to have their immigration status checked upon being booked into the Monterey County Jail. The number of immigration holds before the program, was at 4%, that number is now 19%, the equivalent of about 1,000 inmates.
Officials at U-C-S-C have agreed to adopt a meat-free day in an effort to create an awareness to a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. The student animal rights group, Banana Slugs for Animals, with help from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, reportedly pushed the University to offer vegetarian dishes only at least one day a week. U-C-S-C dining officials responded this week by agreeing to make one of the five dining halls completely meatless every Monday on a rotating basis.
Pacific Gas and Electric will hold an Answer Session in Capitola today. Residents will be able to get information and ask questions about P-G-and-E services, including Smart Meters. The session will take place from 1-to-4 p.m. at the P-G-and-E payment center in Capitola across from the Ross and Kohl’s stores. The cities of Scotts Valley, Capitola, Santa Cruz and Watsonville have all joined a petition to block the installation of the Smart Meters throughout the Central Coast.
