SO. SANTA CLARA CO. MOTH QUARANTINE 09-24-10 07:45 a.v.

A 93-acre square mile quarantine of grapes in South Santa Clara County has been enforced after 3-European grapevine moths were recently discovered. The eradication plan, which was announced by the Santa Clara County Ag Commissioner, requires that all bulk grapes, harvest bins and equipment may not leave the quarantined area. The moths were found near Watsonville and Day Roads last week. The boundaries of the proposed quarantine in Santa Clara County will include Llagas Road in Morgan Hill on the North, Foothill Avenue and New Avenue in Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy on the East, Miller Avenue in Gilroy on the South, and the Santa Clara/Santa Cruz County line on the West.

S.C. COUNTY FURLOUGH FRIDAYS 09-24-10 10:00 a.v.

As part of a cost saving measure that was launched in July, Santa Cruz County offices will be closed today. Today’s closure is one of 15-planned furlough days that is slated to occur on one Friday a month for the next year and for a week at the end of December. The closures affect all county offices except Child Support Services and Sheriff’s Deputies on patrol. Some Santa Cruz County Superior Court offices and services will be closed during the county furlough days. Watsonville courthouse will be closed but, the clerk’s offices at the Santa Cruz courthouse at 701 Ocean Street, will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., while a drop box will be available until 5 p.m. during furlough days.

SALINAS ATTEMPTED MURDER ARREST 09-24-10 08:00 a.v.

A man who was charged with raping and beating his girlfriend, was arrested yesterday. Police say 39-year old Baltemar Valenzuela Lopez forced his way into the victim’s residence on the 1600 block of Boston Street Wednesday night, where he choked and beat the woman severely causing her to lose consciousness. Lopez then sexually assaulted and raped the woman. She was able to escape and call the police. Lopez was later booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of rape, false imprisonment and attempted murder.

S.C. PROPOSES NEW POT CLINIC MORATORIUM 09-24-10 07:45 a.v.

A plan to prevent new medical marijuana dispensaries from opening in Santa Cruz is being proposed. Santa County Supervisors plan to enact a moratorium on new dispensaries in unincorporated areas while rules are being drafted. The regulations, which are under the proposal being put forth by supervisors, are expected to be drafted within the next month and a half. Meanwhile, a 45-day moratorium on dispensaries would take effect immediately, upon approval of the plan.

SALINAS DOM. DISPUTE ARREST 09-24-10 06:45 a.v.

A 35-year old man was booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping after beating a woman in front of a Salinas bar Wednesday night. Anthony Underdue is accused of following a woman from the intersection of John and Front Streets, engaging in a verbal dispute with the woman, physically assaulting her outside of the Penny Farthing Tavern on San Luis Street, then dragging her through the alley next to the building. Underdue was arrested shortly after the incident at the corner of Salinas and West Alisal streets.
