The 3rd largest employer in Santa Cruz County has been recognized for it's family friendly policies. Dominican Hospital was honored with the 2010 Family Friendly Workplace Awards due to it’s ability to offer family friendly options in the workplace including flexible schedules, job sharing, part-time employment with pro-rated benefits, telecommuting, tax-saving options for child care expenses and paid time off. The recognition comes from The United way of Santa Cruz County Success by 6 program, and the Santa Cruz County Breastfeeding Coalition.

WVILLE FLUORIDATION PLAN APPROVED 09-29-10 06:30 a.v.

Watsonville council members voted last night to approve a plan to fluoridate the city’s water. The controversial decision was passed in a 4-to-3 vote to design and operate a fluoridation plant, despite concerns raised over the side effects caused by fluoridating the water. The city was facing a $200 a day fine if the city did not decide to add fluoride to it’s water supply. The approval comes after state regulations requiring city’s add fluoride to their water supply to help keep developing teeth healthy.

BODY FOUND IN S.C. – UPDATED 09-29-10 05:20 a.v.

A body that was recovered yesterday from the Soquel area in Santa Cruz is being investigated as a homicide. Santa Cruz County Deputies discovered the body of an adult male in his 40’s in a remote area on private property off Old San Jose Road at Laurel Glen Road. Deputies say due to the remote location and evidence found at the scene, they are treating the case as a homicide until they can prove otherwise. An autopsy was supposed to have been conducted yesterday. As of last night, the man was tentatively identified, but further information will not be released until family members have been notified.

BEN LOMOND PARK PROJECT 09-29-10 05:20 a.v.

Work got underway last week in Ben Lomond for a park improvement project that’s expected to last through the end of the year. Construction of the Ben Lomond Park is an effort to bring more residents to the park. The development plan calls for a new playground with amenities appropriate for children ages 2-to-12, a nature trail lined with picnic tables and barbecue grills and new landscaping and irrigation in a portion of the 1-acre Mill Street park. Future improvements include building concrete steps down to the river.

INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE INTO S.C. SHOOTINGS 09-28-10 19:30 a.v.

Investigations continue into 3 recent Santa Cruz shootings which left one person dead over the weekend. 22-year old Beach Flats resident Omar Alejandro Lopez Patlan was fatally shot just before 1 a.m. Saturday while he was sitting in the passenger seat of a car parked near 17th Avenue and Rodriguez Street. Then an 18-year old man attending a memorial service for Lopez-Patlan was shot Sunday at 6:15 p.m. Police believe that shooting was gang-related. A 28-year old Santa Cruz man was shot several times Saturday at 6:45 p.m. after a confrontation with another man near Center and Lincoln Streets. Police say that shooting stemmed from drugs and gangs. Finally, on Sunday evening, a shooter on a bicycle fired shots into a home on Woodrow Avenue and Walk Circle. Police found the bike of the suspected gunman in the 400 block of California Street. Police ask anyone with any information into any of these crimes to contact them at 831-420-5820.
