SUSPICIOUS BOX FOUND IN S.C. CITY HALL 10-06-10 11:30 a.v.

The Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Bomb Team was called in after a suspicious box was found this morning inside City Hall. The initial call came in at 7:45 a.m. when a large tackle box was spotted under a bench near the finance department. Police evacuated the north wing of City Hall as well as roping off Center Street in front of City Hall while the contents inside the box were investigated.

L.O. MAN TO BE ARRAIGNED THIS WEEK 10-06-10 11:00 a.v.

Arraignment was postponed yesterday for a Live Oak man who was arrested Friday on suspicion of murder. Louis Nicholas Kusalich, who has been on suicide watch in Santa Cruz County jail, is accused of killing 51-year old Robert Burr. Burr’s body was discovered last week in a rugged area near Soquel. Kusalich has now been scheduled for arraignment this Friday October 8th.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 10-06-10 10:40 a.v.

Fire Prevention Week kicked off this week. This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week 2010, which began on Monday, is “Smoke Alarms, A sound you can live with”. Cal-Fire officials suggest the following the tips to update and maintain home smoke alarm protection:

-Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, outside each sleeping area.

-Check smoke alarm batteries every month.

-Change smoke alarm batteries twice a year when changing clocks for daylight savings time.

-Plan and practice your family’s home emergency escape plan together several times a year.

-Make sure emergency telephone numbers are accessible.

-Obtain and learn how to use a fire extinguisher.

MORGAN HILL CHILD MOLESTATION 10-06-10 09:00 a.v.

A Tracy man faces charges after molesting a Morgan Hill girl and her friend 10 years ago. 45-year old Santy Robillos was arrested after a search warrant was served at his Kavanagh Avenue Home on September 20th. The arrest came months after a 16-year old girl alleged that Robillos sexually assaulted her when she was 6 or 7 years of age. Robillos, who was booked into Santa Clara County jail for lewd acts on a child under the age of 14, is expected to plead to charges on October 12th.

SMARTMETERS/MONTEREY-MARINA 10-06-10 07:00 a.v.

he SmartMeter controversy continues on the Central Coast. Last night Monterey City Council members agreed to vote on a year long moratorium during an upcoming council meeting. Meanwhile, in Marina, dozens protested outside Marina City Hall last night opposing the installation of SmartMeters saying the device would effect people’s health, privacy and the cost of their bills. The Marina City Council is expected to continue the SmartMeter discussion next Tuesday. Santa Cruz County and the City of Watsonville have already approved a moratorium on the installation of the meters.
