’08 SALINAS MURDER LAWSUIT SETTLED 10-20-10 07:00 a.v.

A lawsuit filed against the city of Salinas, was settled this week by the mother and husband of a woman who was fatally shot by police officers 2 years ago. City officials announced yesterday that under the terms of the settlement, the city will pay Maria Irma Dela Torre’s mother, Maria Saldago Dela Torre, 1.6 million dollars, while her husband, Jose Maximiano Licea Abarca, will receive $525,000. Dela Torre was fatally shot on July 13th of 2008 after the woman reportedly threatened officers with what was believed to be a knife or ice pick at the time, but turned out to be a crochet hook in her hand instead.

KILLED SALINAS FARM WORKER IDENTIFIED 10-20-10 06:30 a.v.

A Salinas farm-worker, who was killed this week during a reported occupational accident, has been identified. 46-year old Alfredo Gonzalez Raya died at the scene when he was struck by an agriculture vehicle while he was working in a field located at Cooper and Blanco Roads in Salinas. An autopsy confirmed that Raya died as a result of multiple blunt-force injuries. The investigation into the incident is being conducted by the California Highway Patrol along with the California Department of Industrial Relations, and the Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

AGREEMENT REACHED/SALINAS RESTAURANT & SCHOOL 10-20-10 06:00 a.v.

An agreement over alcohol issues has been reached between a Salinas school and the owners of a proposed new area restaurant. The Blue Goose Kitchen, a proposed restaurant and bar, is expected to move in at South Main and San Joaquin Streets and share a parking lot with the Salinas Montessori School. Last night during the Salinas City Council meeting, both sides agreed that no hard liquor will be sold before 5 p.m. on weekdays, and customers who order food, will be allowed to order beer and wine only before 5 p.m.

WVILLE FATAL MARKET SHOOTING - update 10-20-10 05:50 a.v.

Police in Watsonville are investigating a fatal shooting that took place during a robbery attempt yesterday afternoon. The 1 p.m. shooting occurred at the Fiesta Latino Market at Beck and Center streets when the gunman went into the market and had a conversation with the clerk, who has been identified as the store owner, 32-year old Yahya Ahmed. The man then walked out of the market, returned with a handgun, demanded cash and then fatally shot Ahmed. Police are searching for a white male in his 20’s with a blonde or brown shaved head, heavyset, about 6-feet tall. This is Watsonville’s 1st murder this year, and 15th in the county.

SALINAS BROTHERS PLEAD NOT GUILTY 10-19-10 19:30 a.v.

A Salinas man pleaded not guilty today to charges that he kidnapped and stabbed his girlfriend's 12-year old son over the weekend. The boy was found early Sunday morning in a field just outside of Salinas on Chualar Canyon Road with up to 30-stab wounds to his upper body, 6 or 7 hours after the assault. 29-year old Severino Perez faces charges of attempted murder with enhancements of inflicting great bodily injury and use of a deadly weapon, kidnapping, child endangerment and filing a false report. Meanwhile his brother, 25-year old Domingo Perez was charged with child endangerment, inflicting great bodily injury, in addition to arrest warrants. Both men pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.
