Sal Shots 10/24/10 TDH

 A shooting in Salinas on Friday evening hospitalized a teenager.   The 14-year-old boy was airlifted to a Bay Area Trauma Center in serious condition, after he and another teen were assaulted as they walked to a football game.   The 2-were confronted by the passenger of a Honda, which had stopped near the victims as they walked on Nantucket Boulevard and Newcastle Way.   Several shots were fired, and while 1 teen was not hit, the 14-year-old was struck in the lower torso.  Police believe the incident was gang-motivated, however they do not believe the victims are affiliated with a gang.   Police are still searching for the suspects, who fled in the Honda, and are believed to be juveniles.

W.V. stabbing 10/24/10 TDH

Watsonville police are investigating a stabbing of a 29-year-old, which occurred at 7 o’clock Sunday evening.  Police responded to initial reports of a shooting on the 1-hundred block of Quinn Avenue, and discovered that the victim had been stabbed multiple times.   He was taken to a local hospital, and is expected to survive his injuries.

Monterey Skate Park Repairs 10/24/10 TDH

Monterey’s skateboard park in El Estero park is scheduled to be closed for about 3-weeks to make repairs, starting monday.   The project to repair cracks, reinforce some concrete edges, and perform leveling work, is expected to cost more than 38-thousand dollars.   The work is being funded by the City of Monterey’s Neighborhood Improvement Program, and the work is being done by State Parks crews.

Volunteers Make Difference 10/24/10 TDH

Hundreds of volunteers turned out on Saturday to help the community, as part of the 5th annual Santa Cruz County Serve the Bay community service event.   Volunteers painted schools, helped at local homeless shelters, held blood and food drives, and found several other ways to help the central coast.   The event fell on national Make A Difference Day, which encourages residents to get out and help their community.

Small business program 10/24/10 TDH

A program to help provide loans to small business owners in santa cruz is set to expand, after Comerica bank announced that it would provide 150-thousand dollars to the program.   The Grow Santa Cruz Fund was established a year ago, with funds from the National Development Council (which is licensed by the U.S. Small Business Council).   The program seeks to provide loans to small business owners who might not meet the requirements of local banks.  The loans also have more generous terms than banks offer.   Comerica officials are set to present the check at the Santa Cruz city council meeting scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday.
