WVILLE MURDER ARRAIGNMENT TODAY 10-29-10 05:50 a.v.

An arraignment is slated today for a 17-year old accused of killing a Watsonville store owner during a recent robbery. Christian Speaker, who is expected to be charged as an adult in Santa Cruz County Court, faces life in prison without parole for the October 19th fatal shooting of the owner of Fiesta Latino Market, Yahya Ahmed. Surveillance video captured the incident at the East Beach Street market. Speaker, meanwhile, remains in Juvenile Hall until he turns 18, when he will be transferred to Santa Cruz County Jail.

2 SALINAS GAS STATIONS ROBBED 10-29-10 05:30 a.v.

Police in Salinas are searching for 2 suspects who simultaneously robbed 2 gas stations last night. Police say 2 masked individuals were seen on Clark Street when one of the men walked into the Quik Stop on Clark Street and the other walked into the Valero station on West Market Street. Both men demanded cash from the clerks at gunpoint, and then were last seen fleeing into a silver 4-door vehicle towards Nacional. Anyone with information is asked to call the crime tip line 1-800-78-crime.

WVILLE NURSES RETURN TO WORK 10-29-10 05:00 a.v.

Watsonville nurses are expected to be back at work today following 3 days of rallies and picketing. Nurses at Watsonville Community Hospital walked off the job Tuesday, in what was intended to be a 24-hour strike regarding staffing issues, but then were turned away when they attempted to return to their shifts Wednesday. A rally with over 100 nurses was held yesterday in front of the hospital over lagging contract negotiations and the lock-out. Nurses, who say they want increased staffing to better care for patients, are said to be readmitted today. No talks with Union representatives have been scheduled.

3 S.C. BURGLARIES….RELATED? 10-28-10 19:40 a.v.

Police in Santa Cruz are investigating whether 3 different burglaries that occurred within the city in the past week, are related. Someone entered a home on the 600 block of Pine Street Monday and stole several items, then around 3 p.m. Saturday, a home on the 600 block of Soquel Avenue was burglarized and then a residential burglary occurred on the 600 block of High Street Friday. Police say it’s difficult to determine if the 3 incidents were related since each case involved a different mode of entry, and were in different parts of the city.

SALINAS FATHER PLEADS NOT GUILTY 10-28-10 19:30 a.v.

A not guilty plea was made today by the father of a 6-year old boy who was seriously wounded in August while playing with a gun. Eddie Camacho, of Salinas pleaded not guilty to one felony count of negligent storage of a firearm. The charges follow an August 31st incident when the boy found the firearm stored underneath his parent’s bed at their Santa Rita Street apartment in Salinas. The youth was airlifted to a Bay Area Hospital, meanwhile, Camacho is expected to appear in court on November 10th.
