A groundbreaking ceremony took place in the city of Castroville yesterday marking the beginning of a new housing project. The 18-million dollar development plan consists of a 58-unit affordable housing project combining residential and commercial use with apartments built above businesses. The new development, which is an effort to revitalize the city by bringing more people and businesses into the community, will be located on 2 separate parcels 5 blocks apart on Merritt Street.

Police in Salinas are investigating a shooting that wounded a 19-year old man while he was sitting in his car last night. The just before 7 p.m. incident took place at the corner of Stratford Court and Emerald Drive when the man suffered gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries where he was treated and later released. The shooting is being treated as gang related. Anyone with any information is asked to call the crime tip line at 1-800-78-CRIME.

Hollister School District Officials are said to cut after school sports in its middle schools next year. The cuts, expected to take place in January, are a reported effort to reduce 2.5 million dollars within the next 2 years. Officials say they can’t afford the stipends for the coaches. Parents, who are concerned about kids getting involved in destructive activities such as drugs and gangs, will be faced with finding alternatives to the after school sports program by next year.

Proceeds from a fund-raising event will go towards helping a Ben Lomond man pay for his dog’s surgery. 3-year old Marge lost the use of her front leg during a truck accident about a month ago. Surgery to remove the leg will cost Marge’s owner, 34-year old Johnny Hostetter roughly $4,000. Hostetter, who works at the Scarborough Ace Hardware in Scotts Valley, is asking for the community’s support. A barbecue will be held Saturday at the Ace Hardware on 218 Mount Hermon Road in Scotts Valley beginning at 11 a.m. Proceeds from hot dog and soda sales will help pay for Marge's surgery.
