An electrical outage caused Watsonville Community Hospital to go without power for over a day this week. Hospital officials say the hospital’s 2 generators kicked in when a problem with the electrical system went out Monday at around noon until about 6 p.m. last night. Services and patient treatment were not interrupted, however, the hospital was without television or hot food for a day and a half.
3 schools in East Salinas were placed on lockdown for about 3 hours yesterday after a man was detained in connection with a suspected burglary. 23-year old Francisco Orozco was seen going door-to-door in the neighborhood of the 900 block of La Mancha Way, when he broke into one of the homes and barricaded himself inside when officers arrived at around 11 a.m. The campuses of Frank Paul and Cesar Chavez Elementary schools, along with La Paz Middle School were closed down as a precaution. A K-9 unit was sent into the home at around 2 p.m and forced Orozco out of the home. No one was home during the standoff. Streets in the neighborhood were reopened after 2, and Orozco was booked into Monterey County Jail after being treated at a local hospital for lacerations caused by the K-9 unit.
A man, who tried to outrun officers in Capitola Monday, was arrested for evading officers. Police say the just before 2 p.m. incident occurred when the 50-year old man was approached by officers near the corner of Capitola Road and Sommerfeld Avenue. The driver then fled on Capitola Road running several stop signs and red lights. Police then pursued him onto Highway-1 with speeds reaching up to 75-miles per hour when he exited at Bay Avenue and spun out. He was apprehended near the spinout.
Those responsible for abandoning pet birds this week in Santa Cruz, are being sought. The 15 pigeons, who are believed to be homing pigeons, were found starved with parasites in front of a Masonic Community on Highway 9 in the Santa Cruz mountains. The birds are said to be recovering at the Native Animal Rescue in Santa Cruz. Anyone with information is asked to call the Native Animal Rescue at 831-462-0726. It is a misdemeanor in California to abandon any animal.
2 teens were arrested last night in Salinas after officers responded to a report of a burglary in process. Police arrived on the 1,000 block of Kensington Way at 11:20 when a 16-year old male was seen jumping over a fence. Officers then noticed a 17-year old male running from the front yard of the victim’s house, police say a 3rd suspect escaped. Both teens were arrested and booked into Monterey County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of conspiracy, burglary and resisting arrest, one of the suspects was also arrested on suspicion of possessing child pornography, after child pornography was found on his cell phone.
