Desal Proposal 11/12/10 0800 E.A.

Supporters and critics of a regional desalination plant presented oral arguments at the state Public Utilities Commission headquarters on Wednesday. Oppon`ents of the desalination plant are calling for tougher measures to ensure that project costs are kept down, and supporters are arguing that the commission should review the proposal as it currently stands. The full commission is expected to consider the project on December 2nd.

HIGH MCO WATER BILLS 11-12-10 08:00 a.v.

An investigation continues into several high water bills that were sent to 2 different Monterey County Residents recently. A Carmel Valley, resident and Cal-Am water customer, received a water bill for over $8, 200 where the usual monthly water bill averages $200. Meanwhile, a Pacific Grove resident received a water bill amounting to over $2,600, reflecting a usage of 70-thousand gallons of water, the equivalent to at least 5 swimming pools. Cal-Am officials say in both cases, the high rate may be attributed to a water leak. Currently Cal-Am is working with both families on resolving this issue.

NEW SEASIDE POLICE CHIEF 11-12-10 07:30 a.v.

A new police chief, who was announced this week for the city of Seaside, is expected to begin her new duties next month. Vicki Myers has over 23 years of law enforcement experience at the Mesa Arizona Police Department as the Police Commander of Hiring, Training, Communications and Records prior to being a District Commander and Operations Commander and then the Interim Police Chief for the Department there. Myers is slated to start her new position December 13th.

MARINA MAN IS SEASIDE’S 1ST 2010 MURDER 11-12-10 07:00 a.v.

No arrests have been made after a 26-year old Marina man became the city of Seaside’s 1st homicide of the year this week. Dwayne Choates Junior was shot multiple times Wednesday night in the 1500 block of Yosemite Street at about 9:20. Choates was taken to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula where he succumbed to his injuries. Officers are still investigating whether the shooting was gang-related. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Seaside Police Department.

SPECIALTY CROPS GRANT MONEY 11-12-10 06:30 a.v.

Proposals are now being accepted for the 2011 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program, a program that’s designed to promote specialty crops in California. The Agriculture grants, totaling 17-million dollars, are made possible by funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The application process for the grants begins after concept proposals are submitted by eligible non-profit organizations among others. All proposals must be submitted electronically by December 20th.
