NO HOMES WERE THREATENED BY A SMALL BRUSH FIRE IN BEN LOMOND THIS AFTERNOON. THE BLAZE WAS CALLED IN AROUND 3 P.M., OFF HIGHWAY 9 NEAR OLD COUNTY ROAD. FIREFIGHTERS HAD THE FLAMES UNDER CONTROL WITHIN ABOUT 10 MINUTES OF THEIR ARRIVAL ON THE SCENE.

No contest pleas were entered by 2 Castroville women who were charged with stabbing a Watsonville woman and leaving her in a field along Highway 156 last year. 39-year old Lynda Hernandez and 18-year old Sadie Stephens were arrested last June after a motorist found the 35-year old victim near the highway at Monterey Street with stab wounds all over her body. The woman survived, meanwhile Hernandez and Stephens are charged with kidnapping with great bodily injury, the use of a weapon and intimidating a witness. Stephens faces 8 years in prison, meanwhile Hernandez faces 11 years. Sentencing is slated for August 12th.

The suspect(s) responsible for burglarizing over a dozen post office mail boxes in North Monterey County over the weekend, are still being sought. Monterey County sheriff’s deputies say someone broke into the U.S. Post Office at the Moss Landing Harbor overnight Saturday, and stole an unknown amount of mail from the boxes. The theft was discovered just before 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Deputies say several pieces of mail were found near the Moss Landing Harbor.

WHAT WAS FIRST REPORTED AS A POSSIBLE FATAL SHOOTING DURING A ROBBERY IN SALINAS THIS AFTERNOON, HAS BEEN RE-ASSESSED AS A MAN DIEING AFTER BREAKING INTO A CLAY STREET APARTMENT. POLICE OFFICERS SAY IT’S UNCLEAR IF THE MAN (WHO APPARENTLY BLED TO DEATH AFTER CUTTING HIMSELF ON BROKEN WINDOW GLASS), WAS BREAKING INTO HIS OWN, (OR SOMEONE ELSE’S) RESIDENCE. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AT AN APARTMENT COMPLEX NEAR CHURCH STREET.
