The city of San Jose is blazing the trail when it comes to police reform.
This week clinicians handling mental health calls will have immediate access to two on call police officers specially trained in mental health.
The latest reform is expected to take minutes off the response time for a mental health crisis. The pilot program is made possible thru a grant from the Department of Justice.
Police Chief Eddie Garcia is hopeful the program will be a success and the department can eventually have a dedicated full mental health team to supplement patrol shifts.
