California American Water has withdrawn an application for a permit to construct a desalination plant in the Monterey Bay.
Cal Am says it plans to resubmit its application at a future date but a state Coastal Commission meeting on Thursday has now been cancelled.
The plant is Cal-Am’s solution to a long-term water supply on the Monterey Peninsula. The utility working to comply with orders from a state water agency to cut back pumping of the Carmel River and to build a desal plant from the state’s public utilities commission.
The company said withdrawing the application allows more time for various issues to be worked out in a less-hurried manner.
