Salinas Plans Hotel Purchase for Homeless Shelter 09-16-20 02:35 DC

The City of Salinas hopes to purchase a local motel to use for housing the homeless.

By a unanimous vote on Tuesday, Salinas Council members decided to pursue an agreement to purchase the Good Nite Inn on Work Street. The city plans to use the property as transitional housing and supportive housing for the chronically homeless.

The motel has 103 rooms. Money would come from the state’s $600 million plan to protect and house the homeless during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Salinas’ application needs approval by the California Department of Housing and Community Development.

If the city receives the funding, it is required to complete escrow for the property by December 30. The city hopes to make it permanent supportive housing within 12 to 18 months.

A new Monterey County “emergency shelter” is also under construction at 855 East Laurel Drive in Salinas with plans for approximately 100 beds, according to the county. Construction is expected to be completed next Spring.
