Weddings Yes, Receptions No, Under CA Stay-at-Home Law

Here’s an interesting part of California’s Stay-at-Home orders: Wedding ceremonies are allowed to take place, but receptions are not.

The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said it has received multiple complaints about venues planning to hold illegal wedding receptions.

Thanks to the First Amendment, mass gatherings for faith-based services, cultural ceremonies and protests are allowed to continue. But these events need to be conducted outdoors while participants wear face coverings and practice physical distancing. Wedding ceremonies are part of that exception, but wedding receptions are not.

The Monterey DA’s Office said the reasoning behind the order is that receptions pose a high risk for transmitting COVID-19 because it is a social gathering involving members of different households.

Violations of public health orders can be reported to consumercomplaints@co.monterey.ca.us or 831-647-7770.
