Plastic Fantastic 7/31/20 5a ci

Ever wonder what happens to all those recycled plastic bottles? Cal trans is making good use of them for a pilot project.

A stretch of Highway 162 in Oroville will be repaved using completely recycled materials, including thousands of old plastic bottles.

The new process developed by “Techni-soil Industrial” of Redding uses the recycled plastic as a top coat on the asphalt and also eliminates the need to have outside trucks bring in asphalt material for repaving.

The 3.2 million dollar project covers three lanes of a one-thousand foot segment of rural Highway 162. The state’s highway transportation agency hopes to implement the recycled asphalt program through-out California.
