Armed Carjacking and Chase Ends in SC 7/1/20 03:19 DC

At around 3:30pm on June 30, 2020 deputies responded to reports of a man shooting a handgun in the air near Waddell and Scotts Creek just past Davenport. Not long after, the same male is suspected of carjacking a victim in the area and took off in the vehicle. Deputies located the vehicle north of Scotts Creek and attempted to make a car stop.

The suspect continued driving South towards the city of Santa Cruz reaching over 100 miles per hour, refusing to pull over. The suspect continued into the city of Santa Cruz down Mission Street where deputies terminated the pursuit for the safety of the community.

Moments later Santa Cruz Police Department located the vehicle driving on West Cliff Drive where the suspect became involved in a solo vehicle traffic collision. Deputies responded and assisted in taking the suspect into custody without further incident.

At this time, no injuries have been reported. We will provide an update with additional information tomorrow afternoon.

This afternoon the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office was investigating a carjacking that occurred on Highway One near Davenport. As the investigation unfolded, the suspect was seen fleeing toward Santa Cruz. Within a few minutes, the suspect was driving at a high rate of speed on West Cliff Drive and ended up driving over the cliff, into the surf near Stockton Avenue. Moments later, the suspect was safely taken into custody after climbing out of the stolen vehicle, as he stumbled up the rocky shoreline.

Thank you to all the involved Santa Cruz County agencies for helping out and keeping the community safe, and especially the SCFD & county-wide rescue swimmers for deploying on a moment’s notice.
