Facemasks, Everyone? Not for Now 04-02020 02:48 DC

It’s a question many people have asked themselves, “Should I wear a facemask as protection against COVID-19?” And the best answer, at least for now, is “it depends.”

For example, masks are most protective in preventing people who have the virus from spreading it to others.

But concerns about asymptomatic carriers, people who show no evidence of the virus but can still pass it to others, are creating more questions.

For example, people caring for coronavirus patients should also be protected by a facemask.

Governor Gavin Newsom said Wednesday that face coverings should not be a replacement for proper social distancing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now reviewing its guidelines and may decide to encourage broader use. But for now, the CDC on recommends that people who are sick or caring for someone who is sick to wear a facemask.
