California wants the federal government to provide surplus federal land where housing for the homeless might be constructed. If the Trump administration agrees, the move would mirror one of Gov Gavin Newsom’s new state programs.
Earlier this month, Newsom directed state agencies to identify unused state property that could be used to alleviate homelessness. That could include property next to state highways as well as unused state buildings.
Newsom’s request was sent to HUD secretary Ben Carson.
