Deke’s Is Closed Again 08/22/19A 13:19 S.S.

A Santa Cruz market and deli, that was closed for almost 4 months due to a city water pipe breaking in April, has had to close again because of another break in the 64 year-old cast iron water pipe. The city took responsibility for the water line break in april, and has prioritized the repair and replacement of this pipe, but is waiting to finalize an agreement with a contractor. Deke’s Market And Mah’ Belly Deli, on the 300 block of 7th avenue, had just re-opened august 2nd ….before being flooded with water once again yesterday morning. Co-owner Deke Ramirez said he paid his employees through the last shut down, and expects to do that again this time. Once again the owners will have to replace the products stacked on the floor and lower shelves, as well as the 2 units used to make sandwiches, 2 freezers and 3 refrigerated coolers. Ramirez started a Go Fund Me page to cover expenses not covered by insurance. His goal is to raise $40,000. Customers can find business updates on the market’s Facebook page and via email, dekesmkt@gmail.com.
