Officials say that as money becomes available, all Metro fixed-route buses in Santa Cruz will be fitted with surveillance cameras. 44 fixed-route buses currently have cameras, along with all 38 paratransit vehicles. 50 fixed-route buses will be outfitted with video cameras as funding becomes available.
Metro officials say the camera footage is only viewed after a specific incident occurs. The video not routinely downloaded for viewing and should not pose a significant privacy concern.
No timetable for the installation of the 50 additional cameras has been set as Metro continues to seek funding.
