While bright red JUMP bikes have increased Santa Cruz bicycle ridership, they have also hurt local bike shops.
The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that JUMP bikes have taken more than half of the rental business at Pacific Ave Cycles. There are similar reports from other bike shops whose rentals are likewise down.
Pacific Ave Cycles rents bicycles for $8 per hour and $25 per day. A JUMP bike rental is $1 for 10 minutes and 10 cents per minute after that.
City of Santa Cruz public works says there are 250 JUMP bikes in the city. More than 179,000 trips have been taken and more than 435,000 miles traveled on JUMP bikes. Approximately 23,480 trips were taken on JUMP bikes in January, or about four per day, ranging from 1.84 miles to 32.6 miles.
