California this week became the first state to require new homes to be solar powered. The Building Standards Commission voted unanimously on Wednesday to add the energy standard to the state building code effective in 2020.
Energy officials estimated the provisions will add $10,000 to the cost of building a single-family home. Those costs would be offset by lower utility bills.
