300 Tons of Romaine Hits Monterey Landfill 11-7-18 03:40 DC

Following the romaine lettuce health warnings, officials of the Monterey County Regional Waste Management District say more than 300-tons of romaine lettuce has been dumped at their landfill since the E. coli outbreak began last month.

Normally, unwanted lettuce becomes compost but what has already been packaged must go to the landfill, where it decays and generates methane gas that eventually is converted into electricity.

The FDA says the E. coli outbreak was caused by lettuce grown in the Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz county area.
