People often forget – or never knew – about the role Central California played in the Second World War. Sometimes a surprise appears to remind people. For example, a Hollister dog park has been closed after the discovery of a World War II practice bomb.
The dog park was once a former Navy base and the practice bomb was safely removed. A later scan of the park discovered two larger buried items perhaps related to the site’s former use as a training area for torpedo bombers.
The city of Hollister plans to contract with a company to have the two items, each the size of a 55-gallon drum, removed. The dog park also has a renovation planned.
