Monterey County Bat Tests Rabies Positive 10-18-18 15:00 DC

A reminder about rabies today as a bat found in the unincorporated Las Palmas area of Monterey County has tested positive for the deadly virus. Monterey County Animal Services said there was no human exposure in this incident. But an owned pet was exposed.

Public health authorities warn that every bat should be considered rabid and bats found on the ground especially so. If you find a bat, don’t touch it. If the bat is on the ground, cover it with a weighted box. Call Animal Control to remove and test the animal. Note the names of all people and animals the bat was in contact with. Even if not bite occurred.

It is also important to vaccinate your animals and remember that cats are cows are also common rabies carriers.
