Based on yesterday’s 6-1 vote, Salinas City Council Members now plan to work with county officials to build a year-round Homeless Shelter in Salinas. Even though the location (on the 800 block of East Laurel Drive) is controversial, council members say it is the only parcel the city owns, that is both empty (and large enough) to be used for the planned year-round shelter. Because the city hopes to use some State Funding (to help pay for the new shelter), they had to vote on this project before December to qualify for the funds. The next step will be to draw up the plans for the facility, and the public’s input is being sought on that.
