Supporters of Measure Z are calling on Monterey County officials to join an appeal challenging a judge’s decision to allow new oil drilling. In December, a Monterey County Superior Court judge overturned Measure Z’s ban on underground oil wells and wastewater injection. Last month, Monterey County Supervisors reached an agreement with oil company advocates to not join an appeal of the judge’s decision. On Tuesday, members of Protect Monterey County, which supports the measure, voiced their concerns in front of county Board of Supervisors. County officials are looking to avoid the potential of paying millions in legal fees challenging the decision, leaving the appeal efforts to the advocacy group.
