The Point Sur Lighthouse will be getting its original 1887 First-Order Fresnel lens back. The more than 4300 pound lens has been on exhibit at the now-closed Monterey Maritime Museum since 1992. . It will be taken apart, cleaned and restored, and then re-assembled in the Lighthouse. Each of the 16 panels of prisms in the lens has a bulls-eye in the center, surrounded by concentric rings of prismatic glass. The light from Point Sur’s Fresnel lens used to be able to be seen for 23 nautical miles.
