August 28, 2017: Tobacco Retailer Compliance Operations Cases

(09:10) Santa Cruz County – On June 9th, 2016, California legislation raised the legal age to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21 years old.    Last week the Sheriff’s Office went to 20 retailers during the decoy operation.    Out of the 20 retailers, the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office reported that 10 of them were not in compliance with the new law.   The penalty for the citation could include a fine of up to $200 for the first offense, $500 for a second offense and $1000 for the third offense.  The Sheriff’s Office will be continuing to run decoy operations throughout the County in an effort to increase the compliance of our local retailers.
