Asian Moth in SC-8/17/17-PMD

A single Asian gypsy moth was captured in an early detection trap on a t residential property in Santa Cruz. The traps are used statewide to protect against invasive pests. The Asian Moth eggs are introduced to the area on products transpoted on container ships from China and Russia. A single female can range 25 miles laying thousands of eggs. Infestation outbreaks have been successfully eradicated with an organic bacteria. The pests could threaten local and fruit trees.
