Coastal Watershed Council 05/28/17Su 09:57 S.S.

The Coastal Watershed Council has launched a campaign to inform residents (who live near the San Lorenzo River) about the importance of getting their sewer lines checked, keeping their gutters dry, and cleaning up any pet waste. That’s all in an effort to try and keep pollutants from reaching the San Lorenzo River.

The city of Santa Cruz spends about half a million dollars each year to maintain the public sewer lines, and about a million dollars a year repairing sewer lines, but it’s the homeowner’s responsibility to pay for the repairs on private property, including where the private line links to the public sewer line. The city is considering an ordinance that would require homeowners to hire a licensed professional to inspect private sewer lines, so as to avoid the need for emergency repairs (to stop run-off from getting to the creeks rivers and ocean).
