There’s an algal bloom growing in the Monterey Bay. It’s grown 400 percent in the past several weeks. It’s a similar type of algae to the one that sickened (and killed) hundreds of seabirds in the Monterey Bay back in 2007. This particular type of single-cell algae is generally considered non-toxic….but when it gets battered by strong surf, the cells break down…..causing the foam that is problematic for seabirds.
