June 17, 2016: California Legislature Approves Bill to Expand Education for Inmates

(07:44) SACRAMENTO – California lawmakers have approved legislation that would expand education opportunities for prisoners who are awaiting trial. The bill, authored by Assemblymember Mark Stone, aims to address jail overcrowding and reduce recidivism. Currently, county jails are authorized to give program credits to inmates serving time. This bill would expand the authorization of prisons to allow all inmates to participate in the programs, including those who have not yet been sentenced. The bill now heads to the Governor’s desk for signature. (S.G.)
