June 16, 2016: Harmful Citrus Pest Found in Monterey County

(07:08) SALINAS – An invasive citrus pest was detected for the first time in Monterey County this week. According to the Agricultural Commissioner’s Office, the Asian citrus psyllid was found in a neighborhood in Salinas, near Boronda Road and Constitution Boulevard. The insect spreads a disease that threatens backyard citrus trees and commercial lemon groves. A five-mile quarantine area has since been established in the area where the pest was detected. The California Department of Agriculture has scheduled an open house from 5:30 to 7 p.m. next Wednesday at St.Paul’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall on Pajaro Street to discuss the treatment program and hold a Q&A session. In the meantime, the Agricultural Commissioner’s Office plans to lay out more traps to determine whether or not there is an infestation. (S.G.)
